The present Baroque church was built between 1701 and 1706 to plans by the Jesuit architect Andrea Pozzo, replacing an older Gothic church on the same site. The dome was added in the 19th century.
Inside, the walls and ceilings are covered with Baroque frescoes by Giulio Quaglio. Before you go in, look at the two bronze doors added in 1996 for the visit of Pope John Paul II: one shows the history of Christianity in Slovenia, the other the history of the diocese.
The cathedral stands on Ciril-Metodov Square next to the Central Market and the Bishop's Palace, a few steps from the Dragon Bridge, Butchers' Bridge and Prešeren Square.
