The hill has been settled since prehistoric times, and the first castle was probably built in the 11th century. The fortress was almost completely rebuilt in the 15th century, with walls and towers and the Chapel of St. George, while most of today’s buildings date from the 16th and 17th centuries. Over time it served as the seat of the rulers of Carniola, an arsenal, a military hospital and, for much of the 19th century, a prison. The city bought it in 1905, and after major restoration it is now a busy cultural venue.
The easiest way up is the funicular, opened in 2006, which climbs from the old town to the castle courtyard in about a minute; you can also walk up through the woods. Inside, visitors can explore the chapel, the former prison and exhibitions on Slovenian history. Climb the Viewing Tower for panoramic views over the red roofs, the Ljubljanica river and, on clear days, the Alps.
With cafés, a restaurant and frequent events, Ljubljana Castle is a lovely place to spend a few hours.
