ASTRA National Museum Complex

The ASTRA National Museum Complex is one of the largest open-air museums in Europe, spread through the Dumbrava forest just outside Sibiu. Around a lake and along shady paths stand more than 300 traditional buildings, brought here from villages across Romania.

About ASTRA National Museum Complex

Founded in the 1960s, the museum shows how rural Romanians lived and worked before industrialisation: farmhouses, wooden churches, windmills, watermills, presses and workshops, many of them still in working order and furnished as they once were. Together they tell the story of village crafts and technology from every corner of the country.

The site is large enough for a long walk; in summer craftsmen demonstrate their trades, and fairs and folk festivals bring the village lanes to life.

Allow at least two hours, wear comfortable shoes, and stop for lunch at the traditional inn on the grounds.
