Built over almost two centuries, from the 14th to the 16th century, on the site of an earlier Romanesque basilica, it was the church of the wealthy Saxon city of Hermannstadt, as Sibiu was known. The tower, at about 73 metres, is one of the tallest in Transylvania. Inside are a large fresco of the Crucifixion from 1445, Renaissance tombstones and one of the biggest organs in south-eastern Europe.
The tower can be climbed for a superb view over the red roofs of Sibiu and the Făgăraș Mountains on the horizon.
Check the programme for organ concerts, which are held regularly in summer.
