Curtea de Arges Monastery

The Curtea de Argeș Monastery is one of Romania’s best-loved churches, famous for its elegant carved facade. Its cathedral was built in 1512–1517 by Prince Neagoe Basarab and is dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God. It is tied to the legend of Master Manole, the builder who, according to the folk ballad, walled his own wife into the church so that it could be finished.

About Curtea de Arges Monastery

The church is faced with pale limestone and richly carved with arabesques, and it is crowned by a central dome and slender twisted towers. It was thoroughly restored by the French architect André Lecomte du Noüy and reconsecrated in 1886. It also serves as a royal necropolis: King Carol I, Queen Elisabeth, King Ferdinand and Queen Marie lie inside, beside earlier Wallachian princes. A newer cathedral nearby now holds later members of the royal family.
