Cozia Monastery

On the right bank of the Olt River, near the spa town of Călimănești, Cozia Monastery is one of Romania’s oldest and most important medieval monuments. It was founded by the Wallachian ruler Mircea the Elder, and its main church was consecrated in 1388. Mircea himself is buried inside, which makes Cozia a place of deep historical meaning for Romanians.

About Cozia Monastery

The Church of the Holy Trinity combines Byzantine and Serbian Morava-school influences, with bands of brick and stone on its walls. Inside, frescoes include a votive portrait of Mircea holding a model of the church. Later additions include the small infirmary church from 1543, known for its well-preserved paintings, and the porch, chapel and fountain added by Constantin Brâncoveanu in 1707. It is still an active monastery and pilgrimage site, framed by the wooded slopes of the Olt Valley.
