Mostar Old Bridge

The Stari Most, or Old Bridge, arches over the Neretva river and is the symbol of Mostar. Commissioned by Suleiman the Magnificent and designed by the Ottoman architect Mimar Hayruddin, it was completed in 1566. Its single stone span, about 30 metres long, rises some 24 metres above the water and is guarded by the Halebija and Tara towers.

About Mostar Old Bridge

The bridge was destroyed on 9 November 1993 during the war. It was rebuilt using the original techniques and local limestone, and reopened in 2004. The following year the Old Bridge Area of the Old City of Mostar was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Visitors cross its steep, stepped stone surface, photograph it from the riverbanks and watch local divers leap into the cold green river, a centuries-old tradition celebrated with an annual summer diving competition.
